Manchester United have won the first silverware of the season by beating Portsmouth on penalties in the 100th Community Shield. United have won the Shield a record 13 times and have also shared it 5 times. Ryan Giggs became the first player in history to win the Shield 7 times.

United thoroughly deserved the win and should really have won the game before it went to penalties. Darren Fletcher missed a good chance near the end of the first half and Carlos Tevez was pulled down in the Portsmouth box with less than 15 minutes left; but nothing was given.
