Super Bowl Recap

For those of you that may not want to know the result please do not continue reading this post..

The New York Giants came out triumphant in a 17-14 win that belied the fact that the New England Patriots had been the most prolific offensive unit ever to play the game.

The Giants scored first with a 32-yard field goal from Lawrence Tynes; a native of Greenock, Scotland. The sixteen play opening drive ate up almost 10 minutes and included four third down conversions. The 9:59 drive was the longest in Super Bowl history.

The Giants maintained the 3-0 lead for the rest of the first quarter, but on the first play of the second quarter, Laurence Maroney completed a twelve-play drive by scoring with a one-yard run to put the Patriots 7-3 ahead.

The rest of the first half and the whole of the third quarter saw no scoring plays and the next scoring play did come until there was 11:05 left in the fourth quarter. Eli Manning completed a 5-yard pass to David Tyree and gave the Giants a 10-7 lead.

The Patriots responded and with 2:42 left Tom Brady found Randy Moss with a 6-yard pass for a touchdown and a 14-10 lead. It looked like the Vince Lombardi Trophy was heading back to New England for the fourth time in seven years.

However, with 35 seconds left in the game Eli Manning capped a 12-play, 83-yard drive with a 13-yard pass to Plaxico Burress and a 17-14 lead for the Giants. The final drive was highlighted by Eli Manning escaping a sure-fire sack-avoiding and connecting with David Tyree, who made probably one of the best catches of the entire game.

The Patriots had a chance to go down the field and score but the Giants held and with 1 second left Eli Manning took the final snap of the game and took a knee for the win. He'd emulated his brother from the previous year and denied the Patriots their place in history.
