He who has gone, so we but cherish his memory, abides with us, more potent, nay, more present than the living man.
- Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, 1900 - 1944
It isn't hard to figure out who carried out the Terrorist attacks in London yesterday. Al-Qaeda. Once again, they've shown their flagrant disregard for the sanctity of life, especially innocent life. Even during the worst periods of the troubles in Northern Ireland the IRA had the common decency to warn they were going to carry out an attack to minimalise, as much as possible, the effect on civilians. Al-Qaeda have no such qualms. The groups supporting Al-Qaeda have time and again shown their lack of regard for human life by kidnapping and killing hostages.
Now, I never was a fan or supporter of the invasion of Iraq and I thought the War on Terror was American Warmongering more than anything else; after all how successful has that being? Anything for Bush to secure a second term in office. However, time and again terrorist groups have shown their blatant disregard for innocent life. Surely, they must begin to realise that the kidnappings and attacks are not having the effect they seek. Governments are not going to give in to them and these attacks will only make the Governments' resolve all the stronger.
In my own period of grief I cannot help but spare a thought for the families of the victims of this atrocity. I have an uncle who works in Central London and up until 6:30pm last night we were unsure if he was safe or not. Thankfully, he was, but another death is the last thing this family, or any family for that matter, needs.
My heart really does go out to all the victims of this heinous atrocity. May you all find peace.
